One winters day I left Norfolk
For Liverpool was bound.

That far I had to ride.
But I was young and foolish then
No better did I know.
In Derbyshire the snow was deep
No further could I ride.
The ice it froze upon my face
As I lay on the ground.
This cold dark place is where I die
And soon I close my eyes.
Then through the woods a figure came
She said you have to rise.
Get up she cried Ive waited long
I ll take you to my home.
Its in a clearing in the woods
Theres fire to warm you through.
So come with me dont be afraid
My name is Grace McFay.
Tis in my arms this winters night
I know that you will lay.
Morning came she told me how
She d lost her father dear.
Caught in a wicked snowstorm
He is gone many a year.
From that time on stormy nights
She searches all the land.
To find a lost young traveller
The one who ll take her hand.
Dear Grace says I you saved my life
My love and I ll be true.
My journey first I must resume
There is no other way.
In 2 days time I will return
Once more to hear your voice.
Together then we both shall be
Together we shall stay.
Returning to that clearing soon
No cottage could I find.
But in its place a gravestone stood
Brambles entwined.
The words were old and faded
As I read them through my tears.
